Nightingale

Nightingale

Oil on a sheet of copper. I painted this for a possible cover of a book I wrote for Mel Bay Publications: "Traditional songs from Québec for English-speakers". Nightingales were a medieval symbol for a teacher of love's ways and messenger of love and were prominent characters in many an old "complainte".

Guitar Gabriel

Guitar Gabriel

This piece was made by permission from the work of great Seattle photographer John Gallagher: by gallagher.com. It's of Guitar Gabriel, a North Carolina blues musician. For more about him, his music, and the excellent work of the Music Maker Relief Foundation, please visit: musicmaker.org.

I was very drawn to Guitar Gabriel's amazing, soulful, expressive face. (By the way, the white area is not his hair; it's a hat he was fond of wearing.)

The materials are oils, cold wax, and altered papers, on a support of artboard.

An Exultation of Larks

An Exultation of Larks

A cold wax + oil + altered papers collage.

A group of larks = an exultation. I didn't know this until recently; what a lovely phrase!

I think they're consulting here before they break into song. (The little blue bird might be the conductor.)
