Poppy Pods

Poppy Pods

It took a lot of layers and experimentation for this painting to reveal itself. I do like the juxtaposition of incipient bloom against the darker clouds to the left giving way to the lighter clouds. Out of pain comes new growth: kind of like birth itself—and/or the creative process—if that's not too hackneyed a concept.

White Oak

White Oak

Oil on panel. This is one of two magnificent heritage Oregon white oaks on our property. I love its knots, mosses, whorls, giant limbs, and love lying in a hammock under its huge, leafy bower on a warm day.

Strata Two

Strata Two

Mixed media on canvas: oils, acrylics, pen, collage. I think of it as a person or plant, emerging or growing perhaps, with a slightly celebratory feeling—but make of it what you will!

A plein air painting (painted outside in one sitting.) I was going to paint the Applegate River, but the flowers seemed more compelling!
