Pert Bird

Pert Bird

Oil on canvas. This chipper little chirper was a possible cover for a book I wrote ("Traditional Songs from Québec for English-Speakers", published by Mel Bay.) Nightingales were a medieval symbol for a teacher of love's ways and messenger of love and were prominent characters in many an old "complainte" (lament) or ballad.

Paint on wood. Fanciful imagining of a bug. I traded this piece to one of the best breakfast places in Ashland, OR, (Morning Glory) for many wonderful meals! Fond memories....

I'll Eat That!

I'll Eat That!

I painted this with a feeling of freedom and delight, not sure what the end result would be. This spotted pup emerged, and I realized that one of my favorite poems/jokes was relevant:

THE DOG POEM:

You gonna eat that?
You gonna eat that?
*I'll* eat that!

An Exultation of Larks

An Exultation of Larks

A cold wax + oil + altered papers collage.

A group of larks = an exultation. I didn't know this until recently; what a lovely phrase!

I think they're consulting here before they break into song. (The little blue bird might be the conductor.)

Great Dane/Great Grandmother

Great Dane/Great Grandmother

Another experiment: random drippings and scraping of India inks on Yupo paper mounted on wood. And then this duo emerged: Great Dane and Great Grandmother. (Alternative title: Seeing Eye-to-Eye Dog.)

Animal Skull

Animal Skull

Oil, cold wax, altered papers, ink. This was an experimental piece in which the skull image just sort of emerged from dribbled inks and manipulated images on paper. I then subtracted with white paint that part that wasn't the skull, amplifying and refining the image.
